What the ratings mean:

• Class 1–2: Basic protection, standard shingles. Fine for low-risk areas.
• Class 3: Better resistance, passes 1.75" steel ball drop test.
• Class 4: Highest rating — passes 2" steel ball drop test. Built for Texas hail.

Why it matters for your insurance: Many Texas insurance carriers offer premium discounts of 15–30% for Class 4 rated roofs. Over 10 years, that discount can pay for the upgrade in full — and you get a stronger roof.

We install IKO Dynasty (Class 4 rated) as our standard premium option. It carries a Lifetime Limited Warranty and is specifically engineered for hot, humid climates like Houston.

In Houston's climate, your attic can reach 150°F+ on a summer afternoon. That heat radiates down through your ceiling into your living space — forcing your AC to work overtime. A radiant barrier stops that heat transfer at the source.

How it works: Radiant barriers are reflective foil systems installed on the underside of your roof deck. They reflect up to 97% of radiant heat before it enters your attic space. eShield is a premium double-sided version with added insulation value.

We install radiant barrier on every roof replacement as an available upgrade. The cost is minimal when combined with a new roof — and the payback period is typically 2–4 years in Houston's climate.

Most Houston homes were built with R-19 to R-22 attic insulation. The Department of Energy recommends R-38 to R-60 for Houston's climate zone. That gap is costing you money every single month on your energy bill.

Blown-in vs. batt insulation: Blown-in (loose-fill) insulation fills every gap, corner, and irregular space in your attic — creating a seamless thermal barrier. Fiberglass batts leave gaps and compress over time. Blown-in is the industry standard for attic upgrades.

Types of blown-in insulation:

• Blown Fiberglass: Cost-effective, non-combustible, moisture resistant. Great all-around choice for Houston.
• Blown Cellulose: Made from recycled paper, excellent sound dampening, slightly better air sealing.
• Spray Foam (open/closed cell): Premium option — seals and insulates simultaneously. Best for unventilated attics.

A radiant barrier combined with blown-in insulation is the most effective one-two punch for Houston energy efficiency. Done during a roof replacement, the combination adds minimal cost but delivers years of savings.

Single-pane windows — common in Houston homes built before 2000 — transfer heat at roughly 10 times the rate of a modern double-pane Low-E window. If you've got old windows, you're literally air conditioning the outside.

What to look for:

• Double-pane insulated glass: Two panes with an argon gas fill — dramatically reduces heat transfer.
• Low-E coating: Microscopically thin metallic coating that reflects infrared heat. Keeps heat out in summer, in during winter.
• U-Factor: Measures heat transfer — lower is better. Look for U-0.30 or below for Houston.
• Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC): Measures solar energy that enters. For Houston, lower SHGC (0.25 or below) means less heat gain — critical in our climate.

Houston averages 4–6 significant hail events per year. After every major storm, your roof may have damage you can't see from the ground. Acting quickly matters — most Texas insurance policies have a 1-year window to file a storm damage claim.

What to do after a hail storm:

• Document the date of the storm — your insurance will verify this
• Do a visual check from the ground for obvious damage (missing shingles, dented gutters, damaged AC units)
• Call a reputable local contractor for a free inspection — not a storm chaser from out of state
• If damage is found, contact your insurance carrier to open a claim
• Your contractor should be present during the adjuster's inspection

Red flags to avoid: Be wary of out-of-state contractors who show up door-to-door after storms. They often disappear after collecting deposits. Use a licensed, locally-established company with a physical Houston presence and verifiable reviews.

Houston's clay soil expands and contracts dramatically with moisture. Poor water management around your foundation is one of the leading causes of the foundation problems that plague Houston homes. Your gutters are your first line of defense.

Seamless vs. sectional gutters: Sectional gutters — the kind sold in 10-foot pieces at home improvement stores — have joints every 10 feet. Every joint is a potential leak point. Seamless gutters are fabricated on-site in one continuous piece from fascia end to downspout. Zero joints, zero seams, zero leak points.

Sizing matters in Houston:

• 5-inch K-style: Standard residential — adequate for most homes
• 6-inch K-style (6K): Our standard — handles Houston's heavy rain events without overflowing
• Downspout placement: Every 35–40 linear feet minimum, directed away from foundation

Houston's humidity is relentless. Wood rot in your fascia, soffit, and roof decking is one of the most common — and most preventable — problems we see on Houston homes. By the time you notice it from the ground, it's usually been progressing for years.

Where to look:

• Fascia boards: The flat boards behind your gutters. Rotted fascia can't support gutters and leads to pulling and water infiltration.
• Soffit: The underside of your roof overhang. Rot here signals moisture has been getting in for a while.
• Roof decking: The plywood beneath your shingles. Soft spots mean the structure is compromised.

Prevention is far cheaper than repair: Keep gutters clear and properly pitched. Ensure attic ventilation is adequate. Inspect fascia paint annually — bare wood absorbs moisture 10x faster than painted wood.

During every roof replacement we inspect the decking and replace rotted sections before laying new shingles. We don't cover up problems — we fix them.

Poor attic ventilation is the single biggest factor that shortens roof lifespan in Houston. An under-ventilated attic traps heat and moisture — cooking your shingles from below and creating the conditions that breed mold, wood rot, and premature failure.

The numbers: A properly ventilated attic should have 1 square foot of net free ventilation area per 150 square feet of attic floor. Most homes we inspect in Houston fall short of this standard.

Ventilation types:

• Ridge vents: Run the length of the roof peak — allows hot air to escape continuously. The best passive option.
• Soffit vents: Intake vents at the eave — work with ridge vents to create airflow from bottom to top.
• Powered attic fans: Active ventilation — pulls hot air out mechanically. Most effective in Houston's extreme heat months.
• Gable vents: Cross-ventilation through end walls — less effective than ridge/soffit combination.
